Latin Mottos on Japanese Running Shoes

The name of Japanese athletic equipment company ASICS is an acronym for the Latin phrase anima sana in corpore sano—"a sound mind in a sound body".

Isn't "anima" == "soul"? And the usual phrase "mens sana..."? :)

James Tauber on March 27, 2008:

Yes, mens sana in corpore sano is also used. I guess MSICS is harder to pronounce, though :-)

I'm not sure there was much distinction between "soul" and "mind" in classical thinking. At least in Greek, the words for soul, mind and heart all had overlapping semantics and I'd say that was true of Latin as well.

by the way it is ancient greek as a phrase "nous ygieis en somatei ygiei" originally
